The Real Iron Throne

July 11th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

George R.R. Martin has a post talking about the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones.

The HBO throne has become iconic. And well it might. It’s a terrific design, and it has served the show very well. There are replicas and paperweights of it in three different sizes. Everyone knows it. I love it. I have all those replicas right here, sitting on my shelves.

And yet, and yet… it’s still not right. It’s not the Iron Throne I see when I’m working on THE WINDS OF WINTER. It’s not the Iron Throne I want my readers to see. The way the throne is described in the books… HUGE, hulking, black and twisted, with the steep iron stairs in front, the high seat from which the king looks DOWN on everyone in the court… my throne is a hunched beast looming over the throne room, ugly and assymetric…

Throne from the HBO series

Fortunately he has something that comes pretty close to his mind’s eye. It’s a painting by Marc Simonetti that’s going to be used in The World of Ice & Fire an upcoming concordance of information about the series. The version he has in his post is hard to see but I poked around his server trying out different filenames and managed to find a full size version of it.

Abolish Tipping: It’s bad for servers, customers, and restaurants

July 10th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

Brian Palmer over at Slate thinks we should
abolish tipping.

The only real beneficiary of the preposterously complicated tip credit is lawyers.

He goes on to argue that it does little to improve quality of service and simply allows many service sector companies pay their employees below minimum wage. His proposed solution is also much more palatable than Mr. Pink’s.

First, ask your state and federal representatives to abolish the tip credit, which would turn tips back into actual gratuities: something given free of obligation.[Already true in California] Second, announce your tipping practice to your server as soon as you sit down [and] tip a flat, but reasonably generous, dollar amount per person in your party.

Video May Show 747 Jet’s Last Seconds Before Bagram Crash

May 1st, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

NPR has what appears to be footage of the recent plane crash at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. It is certainly the most gut wrenching plane crash video I have ever seen. Curious about the steep climb that lead to the power-on stall I checked out the comments to see if there were any decent theories. Some wondered about specific take off requirements for that runway but the consensus seem to be that the cargo broke loose.

Commenter Rick S:

I think the cargo probably shifted. Something must have broke loose as the jet was climbing, shifting the center of gravity at a critical stage of flight. Once that happened, those people didn’t stand a chance.
