  • I wish Lawrence would give some specifics instead of waving some “single statute” magic wand.
So as I understand it the “simple” solution is to essentially use Kickstarter for campaign funding with a low dollar cap per person.
In order to cover the $1.3B campaign funding for 2012 then every US adult (194.5M) would have to give $6.80 each. But out of the 145.4M IRS filed forms we could only get > 9% of them to check the $3 campaign donation box totaling $37.3M. It’s grossly not enough.
Not to mention (but I’m going to anyways) the administration fees, joint fillings, and unemployment only make the numbers worse.

“For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong.” – H.L. Mencken

    • Thomas Paine says:

I love the quote from Mencken. The siren song of a simple solution to a complex problem. See: Libertarianism.

I honestly feel, however, that Lawerence is simply trying to re-package a very complex solution as something simple. I also think that the only way he is going to achieve his goals is if people can understand what he is proposing and believe it them to be reachable; a.k.a. a simple solution.

I also feel compelled to point out that he isn’t saying that this single act will save our republic. He is saying that fixing how campaigns are financed is a prerequisite for solving the much bigger problems that our nation faces. His proposal won’t fix those underlying problems but until we return power to the people the only way these problems get addressed is though knee jerk responses to populist demands; which are then neutered by lobbyists once the firestorm dies down.
